Day 1
Foundations of Conflict Resolution & Mediation

Explore conflict, alternative dispute resolution and different mediation models.

Discover interest-based negotiation and how alternatives to agreement shape decision-making.

Understand the mediator’s role, the mediation process, intake considerations and preparation.

Learn how to introduce mediation and establish a constructive starting point.

Learning approach: Interactive negotiation exercises, role-play, presentations and video.
Day 2
Communication Skills That Move Dialogue Forward

Practise delivering a mediator’s opening statement.

Develop active listening and reframing skills to clarify meaning and support constructive communication.

Learn to distinguish stated positions from underlying interests, identify issues and build an agenda.

Explore ways to respond to emotions and recognise barriers to communication.

Learning approach: Guided opening-statement practice, listening and reframing exercises, presentations and discussion.


Day 3
Putting the Mediation Process into Practice

Bring the first two days of learning into coached mediation role-plays.

Practise applying the process, listening purposefully, identifying interests and facilitating dialogue.

Use structured debriefs to reflect on your approach, consider alternative techniques and identify areas for further development.

Learning approach: Four coached role-play sessions, interactive group debriefs and guided review.
Day 4
Navigating Complexity, Ethics & Resolution

Explore private meetings, option generation, reality testing and approaches to impasse.

Examine settlement agreements and how to conclude a mediation.

Consider confidentiality, neutrality, conflicts of interest, power dynamics and cultural differences.

Learn about mediation within Hong Kong’s civil justice framework and the HKMAAL accreditation process.

Learning approach: Presentations, demonstration, interactive exercises and discussion.

Day 5
Integrating Skills & Refining Your Practice

Consolidate your learning through extended coached mediation role-plays.

Apply techniques from across the course, reflect on your decisions as a mediator and refine your approach through feedback.

Review your learning goals, clarify outstanding questions and identify priorities for continued development.
